The Mountains of Mourning – a young, newly graduated Miles is looking for some fun on leave before being assigned. I first read it about five years ago and have now reread it as part of the ongoing Vorkosigan Saga reread you might have noticed if you’re a regular reader infnity this blog.

I thought there was nowhere near enough context to understand what was actually going on in the broader scheme of things though that slightly got fixed at the end? This one comes bujod after Labrynth. What does that mean for his relationship with his mother?

What I remembered liking most about the story was Miles being clever, but of course I couldn’t remember his actual plan when Lpis was rereading.

Miles will always choose those things, and it’s a source of frustration with me because of course it’s only going to end badly, of course he’s only going to break himself in the trying. The boy is brilliant and not a little crazy brave: Miles connected with Commodore Tung who had been running the evacuation operation and learned they had only a short window in which to load the prisoners before the Cetagandan space forces arrived in superior numbers.

Almost immediately his physical handicaps draw the wrong attention and he seems to get more bones broken in this one story than any mcmwster being could possibly endure, yet managed by quick wits alone to unite various prisoner factions og trying to stage a rebellion.

Start with Shards of Honor or the omnibus called Cordelia’s Honor. This particular novella, Borders of Infinity is aptly named, given the spherical setting, and given that it feels almost profound at times. I gave the collection 2 stars because I prefer Miles in his cocky, adventurous bodrers, not the more somber tones of these stories. He has enough faith in his ability to sway people his way that he views being naked, injured, and alone as a reasonable starting place, and trusts Elli and Elena to read an entirely new game plan from random cryptic hints.
