Hard to explore more detail without spoiling the story for anyone who plans to read it, but there are multiple thoughts the man shares – was he to blam This is quite out of usual reading genre, but Dostoyevsky has some appeal, and I have a copy of Crime and Punishment lined up for the future, so I thought I would polish off this short story in the meantime.

The dosttoevsky of the narrator has been compared to the underground man of Notes from Undergroundand of the pawnbrokers in Crime and Punishment and The Idiot that seek to empower dostoevskt through the accumulation of wealth. Dostoyevsky graduated as a military engineer, but resigned in to devote himself to writing. I have vivid impressions in my mind that may last forever — scenes from The Idiot and Crime and Punishment that stole my imagination while I read.

It will stick its cold hand into your chest and make an iron fist around your heart, and when you turn the last page you will have a rotten feeling inside that lingers all day. Of course, I ond be biased, as Dostoevsky is one of my heroes. Taken all together, both the story and its form give a penetrating portrait of a man driven insane by his own self-obsession.


Maybe if they talked about it….?? You cannot always communicate through silence.

The Meek One

Nov 20, R. Now I feel inspired to go back and re-read some of those novels I loved all those years ago. By the time he does realise his mistake and declare his love for her, it is too late and too extreme – after months of not speaking to her at all, he suddenly throws himself at her feet and tells her everything. He simply closes his eyes again, and he is convinced that he conquered her with his readiness to accept death.

I assume that was on purpose His wife has apparently died, as he makes repeated references to her being laid out on a table, presumably lifeless. Same with the few other writings by the immense Dostoyevsky I’ve read so far: The girl decides, after some deliberation, to marry the narrator. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diver ‘I could see that she was still terribly afraid, but I didn’t soften anything; instead, seeing that she was afraid I deliberately intensified it.

This was a quick and enjoyable read, and was probably the right length – because of the limitations of the pawnbroker’s perspective, it might be tough to read a whole novel based inside his head.


Dostoevsky and Tolstoy in the stories might recognize that the female also has a will, a soul, and should make choices freely, but it is also suggested that they’d better freely choose to conform to the convention of feminine virtue. The narrator spares no expense for his wife’s medical care, and she slowly recovers. His situation was made even worse by his gambling addiction.

I still have to read Notes from Underground. The narrator’s wife begins to make a habit of leaving during the day, and eventually it is discovered that she is visiting Efimovich, a member of the narrator’s former regiment.
