I am not sure why some reviewers think Vance is a bad writer. It appears to still be in print in paperback along with the other three novels under the title Planet of Adventure by Orb books.

First UK edition, first printing.

I think Vance has far more to offer than just planetary romances. Nothing too serious, nothing that tugs the heartstrings, nothing overly complicated or so beautifully written you have to re-read certain passages.

Quite good universe, superb prose, excellent characters, surreal landscapes and real intense action plus subtle plot and satiric, and highly critical content. I’ll probably read the rest of the series to see if that citu continues, as I quite like Reith bedeviling the natives with hints of a world of independent humans. The Blue Chasch are non-human, intelligent creatures. Stated first thus printing. Reith also learns about the Chasch, Wankh, Dirdir, Pnume and other intelligent beings o inhabit the planet.

A human starship intercepts a mysterious signal and tracks it back to Carinaa star system light years from Earth. It was Adam Chasxh misfortune to be sent from Earth to investigate. It soon becomes clear that there is much, much more to this o than first glance suggested.

The author was born in and educated at the University of California, first as a mining engineer, then majoring in physics and finally in journalism. Covers show little edge wear, and are protected from any further wear by plastic cover. They then take Reith’s scout-boat and depart. Very good paperback in a removable vinyl book cover.

Fine copy in a fine dustjacket as new. Reith will have to deal with an entrenched priesthood that maintains its power though human sacrifice, dodge shadow wolfes and ten feet tall alen predators in the night, join a caravan across desert lands pf defend it against raiders from the dunes, avoid cannibals and rescue a beautiful maiden from the clutches of the evil Priestesses of the Female Mystery, bring down the pirate lord of a ruined town and liberate human slaves from millenia-old bondage.

Newer Post Older Post Home. When someone sent distress signals to outer space from the planet Tschai, it was Adam Reith’s misfortune to be sent from Earth to investigate. The situation was a personal affront.

This tale sets itself apart from the typical golden age pulp by being published in the late sixties, at a dhasch when Science Fiction was becoming more realistic and cynical by the day, and the gritty edge of both plot and presentation attests to that.

Contains some markings such as highlighting and writing.

City of the Chasch (Planet of Adventure, #1) by Jack Vance

For example, the Old Chasch…. The first in a four book series of Sword and planet type books. It doesn’t take long for the interplanetary scout to make out the common language of Tschai, which enables Reith to gain the trust of a few tribesman—notably their “Onmale” Traz, a sort of temporary chieftain, who helps him to escape to one of the trading caravans that travels from city to city.

Fine copies in fine dustjackets as new. It was written by Jack Vance and follows the attempts of a man stranded on the distant planet Tschai to return to Earth. Each of these alien races displays varying degrees of high technology they are apparently still space-faring mixed with elements of antiquated, even barbarian culture swords, armour, monarchical governments, etc. On Tschai, humanity is an underclass, providing services to the other races, or wandering the planet like Reith’s nomads.

Reith is really my issue with the book. He gives you just enough to suspend belief and hold onto your seats, coz it’s always going to be a ride. In terms of plausibility, one has definitely come to the wrong place. Aug 09, Charles rated it liked it Shelves: Seconds later, a missile destroys their mothership.
